One of my favorite search apps on linux is locate. OS X also has locate. There are other tutorials out there that show how to use locate on OS X but it is for previous versions. This tutorial is specific to 10.6 ( snow leopard ). Lets get to the good stuff.

1. sudo su ( drop to root )
2. cd /usr/libexec/ ( navigate to the proper folder )
3. ./locate.updatedb ( update the index )

Note: launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.locate.plist ( this is the job that will build the index once a week. If you are adding files constantly however, you need to rebuild the index often. )

Issues:
Q. Why didnt you just use ’sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb’?
A. Received these errors

Note: I received the same errors trying to run it as root. It seems in order to run the update script error free you must be inside the ‘/usr/libexec/’ directory, then run the script.

For more information see the man page.

Notes:

While following the official guide on the Metasploit website, I noticed that they used the version 0.9.2 of rubygems which is dated 2007. Here in this guide we also use version 0.9.2, however we update versions when we issue the command ‘gem update –system’. It seems possible to download the latest version of rubygems and skip the ‘update –system’ step, but at this point I personally have not tested it.
